What Is White Sand?
White sand is fine-grained, light-colored sand washed and graded for decorative and landscaping use. In garden design it is strongly associated with Japanese dry gardens (karesansui), where raked sand represents water, and with Zen-style spaces.
For buyers, the two quality questions are grain size distribution and color cleanliness. Sand that is too dusty looks grey; sand with mixed grain sizes rakes poorly. Both should be checked against a current sample.
Applications
Typical uses include Japanese and Zen gardens, decorative ground topping between paving, between stepping stones, around statuary, in planters, and for themed resort landscaping. Fine white sand is also used in craft and retail products.
Outdoors, white sand can blow or wash away in exposed sites, so it is usually specified for sheltered, contained areas or combined with edging.
