Understand the Material Roles

Japanese garden design assigns each stone a role: raked sand or fine gravel for water and openness, uniform pebbles for margins and streams, and individual character stones for islands and mountains. Buying by role prevents over-ordering the wrong class.

Uniformity for Ground, Character for Accent Stone

Ground materials must be consistent — even grain, clean color — because the raked pattern exposes every variation. Accent stone is the opposite: each piece is chosen individually for shape and weathered character.

Sample Before Volume

Request physical samples of both the sand (test how it rakes) and the stones (check tone and grading). Photos are unreliable for this style — the discipline of the design makes small deviations very visible.
