The Formula
Volume (m³) = length (m) × width (m) × depth (m). Weight = volume × material density. Densities vary by stone type and grading, so use the density your supplier confirms for the specific material — the calculator on this site lets you set it.
Worked Example
A bed 6 m × 4 m at 0.05 m (5 cm) depth = 1.2 m³. At a density of 1.6 tonnes/m³ that is roughly 1.9 tonnes. Add a margin (commonly 10–20%) for uneven ground, settling and spillage.
Depth by Application
Bed topping is laid shallower than paths; paths need enough depth for the stone to compact and stay put; dry creek beds follow the channel construction. Match depth to application first, then calculate.

The result is an estimate for planning, not a construction requirement. Confirm the final tonnage with your installer and supplier before ordering — they know the site conditions.
