Four Material Classes, Four Jobs
Pebbles cover ground with a smooth, decorative finish; gravel covers ground economically with angular stability; sand creates fine-textured surfaces like raked gardens and topping; landscape stone creates texture and focal points. Nearly every landscaping project combines at least two of these classes.
The most expensive mistake in stone buying is not choosing the wrong color — it is using a material class for a job it was never suited to, such as rounded pebbles on a steep loose path, or crushed gravel in a barefoot poolside zone.
A Quick Decision Path
Ask three questions. First: is this area walked on? If yes, angular and compactable wins. Second: how close will people get? Close-up areas justify premium finishes like white or polished-adjacent smooth pebbles; distant areas tolerate standard grades. Third: what is the maintenance reality? Light stone in dusty environments needs washing access; loose stone on slopes needs grading that locks together.
Answering these three questions usually narrows the choice to one or two products, at which point color and budget finish the decision.
